1 Peter 5:1 “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder.”
Matthew Henry, the famous commentator on the Bible, went to London, met a young lady of the nobility, who was also wealthy, and they fell in love. She went to ask her father if she could marry him and he said, “He’s got no background, you don’t know where he’s come from.” She said, “Yes, I know, but I know where he’s going and I want to go with him.” WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH GOD? ARE YOU WALKING IN FRONT OF HIM ATTEMPTING TO TELL HIM WHERE HE AND YOU WILL GO NEXT? ARE YOU LAGGING BEHIND, TELLING HIM YOU CAN GO ON NO FURTHER?
Peter was as infamous of a disciple that Jesus had. Interestingly, he will point to the need for strong leadership and the church in terms of how believers can best go through and be lights in this world as we experience hardship.
When Peter here speaks of Elders he is speaking to those who as men and women are genuinely spiritually mature. He is speaking of the substance of their lives. Have you ever thought on the word SUBSTANCE. The meaning is right in the word… sub-stance… You see, it’s what your life stands upon truly… in reality.
There are two other words used for leaders in the church: Bishops and Pastors. A Bishop speaks of the position, the job, the duty of being a leader in the church. Peter talks about it here in verse two “serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly.” Every great church leader I’ve known did not look for or relish this duty.
The other word is Pastor and that Greek Word is poimen and it means “to feed.” This is the main role of an under-shepherd for the Lord… to feed the people the WORD OF GOD.
Wherever the Lord has placed you today, as a husband or wife, a father or mother, a friend, a co-worker or whatever it may be, may you be a leader, a shepherd that stays in the calling God has for you and feeds others the life changes the substance of God’s holy Word. My beloved, bloom where you’re planted and experience God’s blessing in Jesus name.
By His Spirit,
